Have you ever found yourself pulling your hair out trying to navigate the confusing world of Leave Laws? If so, please join us for lunch on February 16th for our meeting on "Leave Me Alone: Tips and Tricks for Complying with Federal, State, and Local Leave Laws" presented by Deidra Nguyen and Pam Salgado, Littler Mendelson, P.C.
Employers in Washington are required to juggle the requirements of numerous leave laws, including the Washington Family Leave Act, the Washington Family Care Act, and the Family Medical Leave Act. And those are the easy leave laws! There are also pregnancy leaves, domestic violence and sexual assault and stalking leaves, military spouse leaves, and mandatory paid sick leaves to worry about. This presentation will provide an overview of the leave laws applicable to Washington employers, including Seattle's new sick and safe time ordinance, and provide practical guidance for responding to requests for leave or accommodation, determining eligibility of employees for particular leaves, effectively reinstating employees after leave, and understanding and avoiding liability.
About the meeting presenters:
Pam Salgado provides advice, counseling and litigation services to employers and high-level executives. She counsels employers with regard to employment-related laws and issues, including federal and state leave laws, the Americans with Disabilities Act, Title VII, Washington State Law Against Discrimination, The Age Discrimination in Employment Act, and the Older Workers Benefit Protection Act. She also assists clients in handbook reviews, training, leave requests, accommodation issues, investigations, coaching and discipline, severance negotiations, reductions-in-force, and terminations. She regularly defends employers in employment-related litigation and governmental proceedings, including claims for hostile work environment, discrimination, wage and hour, disability, failure to accommodate, retaliation, and wrongful discharge. She also has substantial experience prosecuting and defending trade secret and unfair competition claims.
Deidra A. Nguyen advises employers of all types and sizes regarding various employment and personnel issues and claims, including non-competition and non-solicitation agreements, wage and overtime, workers' compensation, unemployment, discrimination and harassment, and disability and accommodation. She helps clients stay current and compliant with an ever-changing legal landscape by drafting and revising employee handbooks, policies, and employment agreements. As part of her employment litigation work, Deidra has represented clients in matters under investigation by the United States Department of Labor, the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission, the Washington State Human Rights Commission, the Washington Department of Labor and Industries, and various other state and federal employment agencies. Deidra is a graduate of the 2011 Tacoma-Pierce County Chamber Leadership Program. Before going into private practice, she clerked for the Honorable Robert J. Bryan and the Honorable Benjamin H. Settle of the United States District Court, Western District of Washington at Tacoma.
